What is the reason behind not being able to give proper chase to a motorcyclist with no helmet? how does him having his skull caved in in the event of an accident have any bearing on how the police do their job? I can sort of understand not giving high speed pursuit to vehicles in built up areas - bystanders may be injured, but anyone breaking the law should expect consequences.

I think chasing anyone at high speed is wrong as other people may get hurt or killed, so it would be a lot safer to shoot them. It would stop anyone ever trying to outrun the police if they wanted to live.

The incident in the news report you linked to was in Bristol, so the police force in question would be Avon and Somerset. If you want to find out their policy on pursuit of motorcyclists without helmets, and the justification for that policy, you are legally entitled to ask, and get an answer, under the Freedom of Information Act.

BTW I'm not having a go at the Police, far from it. Its the red tape that binds their hands preventing them doing their job that winds me up.

As far as 'expecting consequences' goes, anyone running from the law that trips and breaks a nail - thats a consequence. As is caving your skull in when you fall off a stolen motorcycle, a burglar tripping over a stair carpet, cutting themselves on the glass placed on wall tops or being bitten by a dog, or for that matter encountering a freshly made fishermans priest wielded by a semi naked home-owner in his hallway in the middle of the night! I get profoundly sad when I see a parent walking their child to school and said parent oblivious to the child alongside them because the bloody moron of a parent has his/her iPod on and is listening to God knows what. For Christ sake....talk to your child...engage with them...enjoy being with them.

(OK..OK..just to placate the TPA's...it is just possible that they might be listening to a podcast on How to be a Brain Surgeon but somehow I doubt it.)

That's a silly suggestion Roger. Now who would want to disturb the chld when it's texting/playing computer games on its smartass phone :shock:

I think the biggest sheme is that the Bristol tax payers will have to pick up the tab for it all. A chopper will cost around £5000/hour to keep in the air and Christ knows how much the complete bill would be? The clowns on the moped should have to pay that, or their parents! Then the parents might, just might, be interested in what likkle Jonny is up to?

Hmm. Reminds me of the first time I was arrested. No tax, no MOT, no insurance, no horn, no indicators, no brake light, no license for a passenger, no foot peg for passenger, no light for rear number plate, damaged tyres etc etc. My charge sheet was 12 times bigger than the paedophile being charged at the same time. As ever, the police know their priorities!!
