Can i have some thoughts....

Knocked up a nice little oak house sign the other day, and have put 3/4 coats of liberon finishing oil on it so far, with another couple intended.

Then I thought to myself, hang on, is this suitable. It says interior woodwork on the can...

I'm pretty sure the recipient will look after and re-apply a coat of oil now and then.

What do we think, carry on, half a dozen coats of any oil should be okay...
OR
Coat or two of danish oil over the top...?
Or
Firewood, start again

An oil based (aka solvent) long oil varnish such as yacht or spar varnish would be better. However, all these varnishes are high maintenance in harsh exterior environments. Generally they need sanding back and doing again about every 12 months to maintain them-- think of sea going boat owners and how much time they spend maintaining the brightwork rather than sailing, but of course that's an especially harsh environment, whereas a sign outside a house is only harsh. Slainte.
