Anyone got any recommendations on lettering templates?

I've seen the Rockler solution and I like the fact that it comes with multiple templates for the same letter so you get a proper letter. I also like the snap in letters and the kerning. However I do t to now why other options are good etc. Anyone used the Rockler one or any others and have views on them?

I've got the Sign Crafter set. I had got it for putting an inscription onto an oak beam but decided against it as the font was a bit too basic and cartoonish. I don't think any sort of template would be a good replacement for hand carved lettering. It seems okayish for doing nature trail signs etc, has various duplicated common letters for long words. I've not really used it but seem to remember that it's set up to be clamped onto boards of a certain length so faffing is involved if trying to go onto beams or large fixed items.

I wouldn't knock it, but I suppose it depends on the effect you're after. I think there are a limited number of these things with limited fonts/typefaces.

I have made quite a few house signs and have always done the routing freehand using a V bit. If you mark out really carefully and take it steady, it is not that difficult to get very good results. I clean up and improve the corners with a chisel and sharp knife. The trouble with the kits is you tend to get a very uniform appearance that looks machined.

Have a practice freehand - you may find you get the knack quite quickly. You need good visibility of exactly where the bit is going (so wear safety glasses).

Thanks guys. I did like the Rockler approach as it had kerning and looked a lot better than just a standard template. I'll have a play with printing something out and seeing if I can trace that freehand.
