Had a tidy up of my little space, still need to make a lot more space to bring in more wood to dry out but at least I can now clearly see what I have

Red-sycamore
Yellow-Oak
Green-silver birch
Purple-cherry
Also have a block of sapele and a round of butcher block given to me by @Mick p.
Out in the garden I also have more sycamore, cherry and 4 huge sections of eucalyptus trunk, will also be bringing in quite a lot of spalted birch and some oak from the school field, also have a few bits of Hawthorn somewhere.
Think I'm gonna need a bigger maker space.

A few pieces from a hornbeam we felled last week due to damage from the last storm, the ones with black plastic wrapped around are in my garden so have to cover the painted ends or I end up with dogs covered in paint, the others are in the school boiler room.

The smaller pieces are about 5 or 6inches across, the biggest piece is about 12inches at the base

Brought all the logs from my previous post together and stacked them in an old tall slim shed, turns out I had the species wrong, I thought it was hornbeam but according to my tree surgeon and the site tree plan is actually Ash (possibly Mountain Ash?), this tree was felled due to damage from the last storm, the tree surgeon took a few pieces for himself but left the majority for me. I did notice today that the pieces I had used bituminous felt adhesive to seal the ends with have still formed some very small cracks whereas the pieces I used the hammerite paint on have no cracks at all.

Hoping to gather in another tree that fell in the storm, not sure of it's species but possibly a willow, the couple of pieces that were cut from it a few weeks ago have not cracked yet so I'm looking forward to getting the saw out there.

Cutting up blanks! Cottonwood, maple Burl. Got curl, quilt, Burl, colours. Like teenage centrefold wood porn!

They do look remarkably alike. I think the bark is rather different; juniper appears to have a more flaky/peeling bark than yew.

In the words of the oft quoted Mr.Gump; "Life is like a box of chocolates..." and so is milling your own boards from logs!
More wacky wood!
This is from the unknown prunus species I showed earlier.
This is about as big as I can handle comfortably; about 30 inches long by 10 or 11 inches diameter. I think this one weighs around 30kg.
There is some rot in the wood and it has produced some interesting colours. Most of the wood is still sound, and the worst bits can be discarded or cut out and filled with epoxy resin.
The method I show is quick and easy with the downside that you loose a bit more wood and only have one waney edge. Alternatively you can make one of the many jigs illustrated on YouTube for milling logs on a bandsaw.

I have this big pile of spalted ash...

Couple of waney edged boards

And approx 9 4x4" beams 2-4' long.

Any ideas what to do with it? How does it turn? Easier than oak!

I would slice some if it into boards but I don't have a big enough bandsaw /table saw. I could nip over to a mate to resaw in 1" boards for furniture making??

Any thoughts??

4x4 blocks. Perfect peppermill blocks if cut 9-12 inch long.

Oh that is nice wood. If it's sound enough you could use it for making decorative boxes or even Coffee Table tops.

Do you have a self-made or commercial jig for milling timber? Those boards look very nice. For stuff that big I have to go to the Timber merchant!

It is a granberg small log mill that clamps to the chainsaw bar, with a flat surface made from some cheap 2x4 for the first cut. It is a huge amount of fun milling, but waiting for it to season is frustrating!
