Still looking for a suitable planer thicknesser, but having shortlisted a lower induction motor model, am I paying out more just for less noise?

I have never owned or used a P/T, so am not at all knowledgable on the subject, but the 'general' advice seems to be to go for an induction motor as they are less noisey. Apart from the noise, are they equally efficient? Say the REcord PT206 and and equavalent benchtop model. Not too worried if its only an 8" width as I only have a hobby making boxes - .http://www.getwoodworking.com/albums/me ... sp?a=33974

Hello Alex :) As you know I've not had much luck with a couple of P/T's I've bought this past month or so, and after the last one went back I decided to keep saving until I could afford the Jet PT260, but that could have been some time in the New Year. After I lot of thought, I decided that in reality I probably didn't need to spend so much on machine of that caliber for my needs, plus I'd also have to find another few hundred quid for a chip extractor. Around Monday/Tuesday of this week I was all set to buy one of the small bench top models, either the Woodstar PT85 at £250.00 or the Titan TTB579PLN at £150.00, and after a little search found two videos on you tube. I then decided to split the difference and have a look at the Erbauer ERB052BTE at £200.00, but I'd read a few comments on line that parts weren't available, so I called Screwfix. A very nice lady said there was a separate company that stocked all parts for their Erbauer range called http://www.gr8spares.co.uk, and that Screwfix had 400 of the ERB052BTE P/T's left in stock and after these had sold there would be a new model.

I wasn't too bothered about these P/T's having noisey brush motors, I'm partially deaf anyway and my shed is insulated quite well. I'd also read other comments that it's the wood being cut that creates more noise. If you then think that most of the budget extractors will probably have a brush motor, there's no point worrying too much about the P/T having an induction one. That was my way of thinking, but knowing I wouldn't be really chuffed with one of the small bench top P/T's I decided to order the Record PT260 with the CX2000 chip extractor. I called Record to find the nearest dealer to Manchester who had them in stock, so I could at least see one before ordering, and on Thursday I went over to GMS in Chester. Hopefully I should take delivery before next Friday! I'm going to take lots of images, so if you haven't already seen one and you're not in rush I should have the images on line for next weekend. I know there are a few models of this design with very similar spec including an induction motor, but I think the PT260 is the only one with a cast iron thicknessing bed?
Just a note, GMS had a new Kity 439 in stock, a display model on offer at £540.00. Same as this but on a stand http://pennyfarthingtools.co.uk/kity-43 ... 012/12/07/

Hi Pete, thanks so much for your reply. You do seem to be where I am at present, althought a step closer, having ordered the Record PT260. This is the one that wil be on demo in Kidderminster at the end of this month and the one I thought I may go for.

This is an induction motor P/T and the show price will be about £560. With the brush motor ones, the price seems to be around £250-300 and my thougts were that just perhaps, the brush type may be as good, just noisier, but lower price. As you have tried a couple of brush types and now trying the induction Record, I would be very interested in hearing your comments once you have this under way. Had you been closer, I would have liked to see you sorting it out, but no matter. I know that all machines do require to be 'tuned' and probably the P/T is no exception.

My thoughts were that I will initially manage with my present dust extractor as it has a 100mm hose and I will not be using it very often, so can put up with the inconvenience of emptying it regularly.

So ........ looking forward to hearing more from you soon.

All the best
Alex

It's interesting that you found prices of £250 and £150 respectively for the woodstar and titan in these videos...

...given that they're both absolutely identical apart from the badge.

So allowing for the fact that you pay more for less noise (induction motors) you also pay as much as a whopping £100 just for a different badge and speaking personally after having owned a woodstar table saw that's a badge I've always thought of as the absolute pits.

(the planer in the second video is mine btw, I bought it having already seen the woodstar video and it's arguably the best £150 I ever spent)

It's not just the noise (although to me that is a big issue) the induction motor 260 PTs are quite different machines larger, heavier and better made than their smaller brush motor brethren. They're all from the same Far East factories so badges don't really matter - but the specifications can be different. Beds can be cast iron or aluminium, blades come in regrind-able and several different throwaway versions, sat on legs or enclosed cabinets etc.

Just to let people know, these models are not identical. They are very similar but the blades for example don't fit each other. So there are differences. Also the dust extractor looks very different on the Titan in the video. I can also see that the fence is different. I think the basic mechanics will be the same but they do have differences.

I had similar concerns over quality and noise but also space was an issue. I wish there was a higher quality, induction motor option that was the same sort of size. I ended up buying Scheppach one. Only set it up yesterday. Fence was pretty bang on square out of the box. One foot needed a washer adding to lower it to keep it level (feet aren't adjustable) I also greased the chain and threaded bar and that made the raising and lowering of the thicknessing base smoother. I think the blades might need a little adjustment. Overall though it seems pretty good. I had some old 2x2 that had been left outside and looked useless, so I stuck that through it and it looks fab. So hopefully it will be ok. Oh and dust / chip extraction is really good - very pleasantly surprised.
