Will a lawn mower motor be any good to drive a disc or belt sander?

If it is meant to run horizontally it will be fine. the vertically mounted ones are more difficult.

I'd be looking for a washing machine motor personally - got to be easier to mount and already has the provision for a pulley.

Ah, a man after my own heart. I have a large electric pedestal fan that the blades broke up on and flew round the room. The electrics and motor still work fine, just trying to think of a use for it! Can't bring myself to throw it away.
