I use the ''laser printer on glossy photo paper and iron-on'' method of transferring names etc. to wood... and I hate it almost as much as actual ironing.

Thinking about trying a laser engraver so an brain-picking on here.

It doesn't need to cut through anything, just be powerful enough to burn letters.

Max size of material A5 or close.

Any BUDGET ideas? Thanks...

I use a few lasers for engraving and cutting, some standalone laser cutters and some retro fitted heads to large format CNC.

One thing to look out for when buying low end is that the rated wattage of the laser (be it diode or gas tube) is rarely what you actually get. You realistically need 3W and over to make a usable mark on wood in a single pass. My point I suppose is don't assume a stated 3W device will be up to the job. Not a real issue in that you can run multiple passes to achieve the same end result but this can be avoided by simply buying a larger capacity in the first place.

Also, don't underestimate the safety aspect of lasers. I see so many posts where people pass it of as an afterthought and it needs consideration from day one.
