An apology in advance for what probably will appear too many a stupid question .
I am looking for a laminate material as a face for a home made router fence, what sort of laminate do I need?

Some sort of melamine is usually used, its smooth and quite durable. Phenolic would be used on a high end fence but that might be prohibitively expensive for a homemade table.

15 or 18 mm thick melamine. I made my router table out of two x 18 mm x a metre square. Incredibly strong stuff.
Dont go less than 15 mm, it might sway under pressure from the wood being pushed along it.
