I am modifying an old single bed to make a box seat by chopping the side rail into 3 and bringing the footboard closer to the head board. The bed looks like it was originally made out of reclaimed wood, full of knots and nothing particularly flat.

It’s got to come apart for transport as it’s too heavy to be moved as one. Currently the side rails are mortised (no tenons just the whole rail slotted in) into the post and screwed together with a block on the inside attached to rail and post. I could repeat this or another option is bed fittings as per the pic attached but I don’t fancy drilling through 100mm of post.

Has anyone got a suggestion for a better way of doing it?

May I ask why? If it's drill length that's the limiting factor you could drill 50mm from each side without too much bother. As the hole is simply for clearance it's no biggie if they don't join perfectly in the middle.

This kind of drilling is a doddle with a brace and an auger, although on the secondhand market the skinny bits don't seem too common sadly, and rarely survive in good condition from what I've seen.

Bed brackets are easier still. Just screw on then the ends and rails clip together. No bolt ends to hide either. Last bed I made about ten years ago I used them and no problems. Has been moved a couple of times also.

John

Another happy camper with the brackets above. There was a bit of a trick to getting the male part positioned (the male part isn't just quite fully seated when assembled) so downward pressure causes it to continue pulling the brackets together... if that makes sense.
