Sorry guys, I've mainly just come on for a bit of a whinge/moral support...

I bought an old Kity 613 bandsaw from ebay about 6 months ago (£240 + £30 for delivery). It was working well when I got it, but after a few months the motor burned out; £160 to have it re-wound.

After a few more weeks all of a sudden there's a horrible screeching sound coming (i think) from the motor after a few seconds running. Really starting to wish I'd just stumpted up and bought a new machine from Axminster as I'm reluctant to spend more money investigating and repairing this new problem.

anyone have a view on the old vs new question when it comes to powertools? buy new or buy eBay and take your chances?

Chris

I'm a big fan of second hand tools and ebay is a great tool but not as many bargains these days. I bought my sander and bench drill second hand but bought a brand new bandsaw thinking a 1 year guarantee would be worth it.

2nd hand is a gamble, maybe I should have bought a more powerfull 2nd hand bandsaw for the price I paid for my shiny new one. Then again it wasn''t really an option as I only have a small car.

Sounds like you've been a tad unlucky there! I've got a Kity 613 which I bought second hand about 8 years ago and apart from the bearing behind the blade wearing out (easy fix) it's been fine. As much as I'd love to have all new machines my wallet dictates otherwise, my Wadkin planer, Whitehead saw table and a number of hand tools are all from Ebay and all fine – I s'pose it's inevitable that some machines will fail as they are old and used but stuff like Wadkin are going to last a whole load longer than modern, flimsy machines. I'd like to upgrade to a Startrite bandsaw in the not too distant future, I'll certainly be buying second hand again (unless my numbers come up!).

Not sure what's wrong with your Kity - is it definitely coming from the motor and not the running gear?

Im also a fan of 2nd hand tools. Particularly if they're heavy cast iron as apart from the motors there isnt that much to go wrong. But, its a gamble...so far...Ive had more luck with 2nd hand being without fault than new to be frank!

However, Record Power have always sorted me out with broken bits with the 5 yr warranty...I really like that

If you had the motor rewound, surly its under their warranty. I would say never get a motor rewound, usually if its that far gone its a write off and get another second hand or new one. 160 quid would buy a fair size new motor.

The Kity is a decent little machine and bandsaws generally are not complex.
Assuming you are using a good quality blade suitable for the job in hand (talk to Ian at Tuffsaws for excellent advice) and you have the machine set up properly, it is difficult to see what can go wrong, to be honest.
Screeching is often a sign that the blade is being asked to do something for which it was not designed...
What are you cutting and what blade are you using?
Or are you saying that it all screeches even when not cutting?

Is it the motor that is screeching or the wheels. I would suggest it can only be a bearing, but on second thought it could be the blade guides.

Does it screech without a blade installed?

I have several Kity machines all bought second hand and not had a problem.

Hope you get this sorted as I am a real fan of the Kity stuff so I think you need to persevere.

Mick

Cheers for the comments & suggestions guys!

I've backed off the guides so it's definitely not making contact on the guides or anywhere else. It's either that or the wheels - but it appears to be coming from round the back so yeah, pretty sure it's the motor.

The blade is from Tuffsaws, but yeah it screeches even when not cutting.
it as well setup as I can - I've read Lonnie Bird's book cover to cover so I'm pretty sure it's nothing I can adjust.

so, if it is the motor are they obliged to take another look at it? I really don't want to spend more money on it... but then I realise all other parts of the bandsaw work well so it'd be a waste to abandon the whole machine just because of the motor! argh!

to be honest I'm feeling close to just getting rid of it and buying a new one. as much as I hate the thought of spending all that money (which'll eat the all my budget for workshop spends for at least the next three months...) I haven't actually done anything useful for probably 2 months now due to machine problems slowing me down.

Remove the blade and any belt that is connected to the motor. Try it. If it's still screeching take the motor back to where you had it rewound. At least they can have a quick look at it and tell you the problem. They've probably seen so many that they might not even have to look at it.
Might seem strange to some but the cheap Chaiwanese motor on my Bandsaw has never given me problems, not once in over 10 years.

Great, cheers I'll do this - I'm heading over to Wakefield on the weekend so I'll drop it back in then.

I hate you

...I may have just solved this "problem". the fan was loose sitting loose on the shaft and had slipped along until it was in contact with the inside of the motor case. shoved it back on and given a few light taps. hopefull that's solved it!

If in doubt hit it with a hammer, always works. ( well almost always) (hammer)
funny you should say that...

above link should show 3 photos. one of the fan on the shaft, the next with the small circular thing holding this, then the third is after a few seconds running both fan and clip walk along the shaft and fall off. I've tried hitting this with a hammer to secure it, but obviously don't want to damage anything inside the motor.

Suggestions?

I had B&Q own brand epoxy to hand so have used that.

Will let you know how it goes. Thanks all!
