I'm installing a stainless sink into a kitchen worktop...not sure if the sticky sponge tape which came with it will do a decent job!
should I just use a silicon bead around the edge on its own, or go ahead and use the tape...or both?

Matter of opinion.

i don't trust the tape so always silicone as well but I know others who don't. I've never had to re-do one.

I'm fitting one for a customer this Saturday as it happens, just a cheapie job in an office kitchen as part of a bigger job.

If it's melamine wortop, don't forget to seal the cutout.

I tend to do both - a thin bead of clear silicon round the sink gives a bit of added protection. A fine mist spray (not too much) of water over the silicon before tooling down makes a neater job.

Cheers
