I have made some shelves from oak veneered birch plywood which will now get a hard life in the kitchen.
I have been looking at the hard wax finished but can anybody advise their suitability on a relatively thin veneer finish and the level of scratch and scuff resistance
Otherwise what finishes would people recommend
Thanks in advance
Ian

I've found Osmo Top Oil to be pretty good. On a solid oak worktop it's holding up well to general kitchen abuse. Only round the sink (where it's constantly exposed to water) has it needed the occasional touch up. Given that the oil film coating hasn't been scratched off in general use I'd assume a veneer would also be safe.

I would use water-based polyurethane varnish for shelves, it’s also available as a floor varnish which has more of the ingredients that make it tough, I have been walking on my oak floor for six? Years now and still looking as good as it ever was so I think it can stand up to a few tins. Ian
