My 8yr son dropped his kindle fire tablet breaking the screen, now you can't swipe the areas of the screen with cracks in. I think I can get the screen replaced but a couple of places have said it's not worth it because the tablets are so cheap anyway. The problem is my son has a lot of worlds for games like Minecraft and Terraria saved on the kindle (if you have an 8yr old you will know how important Minecraft is). From my (very) limited knowledge it seems that the basic game is saved in the cloud but any progress is saved on the device so if he gets a new tablet all progress will be lost.
Is there any way of accessing the progress from another device or computer, bearing in mind my lack of computer skills or a way to back things up in future if I do get the screen fixed?

Any help appreciated as I have got a very grumpy little boy!

Thanks, Doug

You could try creating a new profile for him on another tablet or smartphone - this is certainly possible on Android, I've no experience of Apple.
Log on on the second device as him. Install any games that are not already on the second device. If it picks up his progress then it proves that progress is synched to the account, so a replacement tablet would just become a clone of the broken one.

I think that is very likely to be the case - it allows for people with more than one device to switch between them and pick up where they left off. The Kindle reading app does this. Google apps such as Gmail and YouTube do as well.

If not, then you can probably just connect the dud device to a PC which will see it as an external drive, and copy files across to the PC and then to a new tablet - but that needs far more detailed knowledge than I can offer.

You've probably googled it anyway but in case you missed this one

So it seems that you are correct in saying the worlds etc are saved on the local device. I would imagine you will need a third party app to browse through the Fires file system, make a copy of the aforementioned folder(s) and then repeat with the replacement tablet but this time pasting instead of copying.

You will need to operate the old tablet in order to access the files so if the screen is kaput I think you're out of luck. There may be a way of browsing the content from a pc but I haven't found anything with a quick google.

Browsing and copying files back and forth between PC and Kindle Fire is fine with everything I've tried.

if you have trouble using the device to backup data etc, a bluetooth mouse is usually very easy to connect to devices like this.
