Having bought some used planes recently (some with some of the irons/chipbreakers in quite poorly corroded condition) I was looking for some replacement parts when I came across a review of a Juuma Plane by Paul Sellers who seemed quite impressed by the plane. As I was placing an order with Fine-tools (for some Gramercy Holdfasts) I decide to try a couple of Juuma replacement 3.2mm irons and 3mm chipbreakers (2" and 2 3/8") as the prices for each were not prohibitive (2" @ 11.90E & 9.50E and 2 3/8" @ 13.90E and 9.50E).
They arrived this morning and I was really surprised to find how good they were out of the box, the 2" Iron needed a little flattening on the back, the 2 3/8" iron did not need any flattening, they were both honed to a 25 degree angle and although sharp, just needed a quick touch up through my diamond stones and buffing compound to give a razor sharp edge. The chipbreakers were a newer style but fitted beautifully (I also bought replacement chipbreaker screws).
I had to move the frogs back on the two planes I installed the Irons on (a number 5 and a number 6) as the thicker irons did not allow the blades to fit properly as a direct replacement without that, but once the frogs were moved and the new blades were installed the shavings I got were fantastic and have breathed new life into my old Record and Stanley planes, and if you're looking for a replacement iron for your plane you could do a lot worse than these for a lot more money and I am going to order a couple more for my other Bailey planes.
