How about Taunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Joinery?

An oldie but a goldie - Charles H Hayward's "Carpentry for Beginners". You'll need to find a secondhand copy as this was last published in the early 1980s, but it is an excellent introduction to joinery, well illustrated (line drawings) with clear and concise text. No references to power tools, but then power tools can be applied to most techniques once you've mnastered the basics.
