I have an old Jacobs number 36 chuck to use on my lathe but it hasn't got a key.

I ordered one from the bay that should work as it lists on the original box that it is a number 4 key and it will fit a number 36 type chuck, it fits into the hole but will not mesh with the gearing.

The chuck is American but the key was made in Sheffield - did they make them with different gearing?

If anybody has an old American no 4 key please let me know as I cant use the blooming chuck.

Thanks, Merlin

I have a #34, complete with key on a 2MT. Any good?
Yours free if you want to collect from Witney. Email me if you are interested.
I believe we met at Chris's sale at Grove.

Hello Robbo,

Very kind of you to offer but I have a # 34 so will pass this time, the # 36 would be handy as I have some bigger shank drills but without the chuck key its not a lot of use.

Thanks, Merlin

Easy when you know how, the chuck worked really well and could be easily spun by hand so I assumed all was well but I decided to strip it down.

Turns out that it must have been dropped at some point and the outer ring had slipped on the main body making the ring rear to close to the pivot hole, this off course meant that the key did not have enough room to mesh properly, took a bit of filing though as the drop had bruised the main body.
