The last couple of weeks has been a bit of a pain to put it mildly. I was expecting a quick operation and then a short convalescence and back to the lathe.

Nope - this is France. The health system is the reverse of the UK. Its NOW and see EVERYONE. On thursday, I saw five doctors! Net result is that they want me to do seven weeks extreme physio. Five days a week in residence and weekends off!! As I can hardly walk, I am not sure how I feel about this.

Anyway, some of my wife's customers are having two trees chopped down. One giant redwood that I am really looking forward to and an Ash. As I'm housebound, they delivered it for me. Trouble is that John Mitchell (famous Turner round here) was chopping up the bits and as he has a VB36 he doesn't care how big the bits are. Diameter is approaching 500mm. I have a feeling my Sealey might struggle a bit with those so I will probably split it again or make some hollow forms and carved stuff rather than bowls.

So I have a barn full of wood that I can't touch - boring.

Oh dear, how long are you housebound for?? how annoying!! Isnt it better to see the docs like they do in france, rather than over here in england...it is all such a waiting process in england!!

Basically, until I can walk for more than five feet and drive again. The health service here makes a mockery of the UK claim to have the best health service in the world. Nowhere close.

Whilst the doc was here arranging for the mammoth session on thursday, I mentioned that I had a sore throat and was having difficulty swallowing - not a happy possibility with what I do for a living. Straight round to see the specialist, ambulance picked me up.

Didn't enjoy the process at all. He didn't tell me he was going to stuff that thing down my throat to have a look. Gagging like mad BUT... all clear but I have a tongue which is set a bit far back and some swollen glands. This was NEXT DAY from seeing the GP!! Try that in the UK. Picked up the spray on the way home and its already clearing up.

Indeed.

I bet he got all the best bits though. It was only after I had arranged to have some ash and that it was a great wood for turning that the customer advertised for any turner's who would be interested. Understandably, he was round like a shot. Any other time, I would have got there first and taken my pick. Still, beggars can't be choosers apparently.

try parking the car only four feet away

If you have any of the branch wood from the redwood have a look at it. The stuff I had in the U.K. was fantastic and full of colour. It turned well and gave of a lovely smell too!

I agree about the medics compaired to that place up North! Next week to see a specialist is no good and appologies for having to wait till Thursday, this was Monday morning!

Good luck with the recovery Gordon and when you can drive you can deliver some of your haul to me. It's only a few hours away

Ta muchly John. If its that close you are more than welcome to come and get some. YEW that is. The ash is all I have of its kind so ITS ALL MINE SO THERE. There is some walnut as well I think but I am unable to shift the pile at the moment. All very frustrating.

Best of luck Gordon, health services seem to be the same everywhere.
With the cutbacks and closures over here its very hard to get appointments
So I count myself very lucky to have been treated within four weeks and its still ongoing.
I'm banned from the lathe for another 5 weeks at least. So I wrapped up the lathe in an old eiderdown
13 tog I believe and have one of those thermo controlled electric heaters on no 1 setting so it should be alright.
In the meantime keep yourself busy sorthing your timber and keep the chin up. God Bless

From what I gather, Cuba plays a very close 2nd fiddle to France in terms of quality health care, We pay so much in England and are rapidly having it all taken away, still enough politics, A speedy recovery Gordon, that wood won't spin itself :D.

A sugestion.

Next time anyone falls ill or injures themselves insist that you get choppered to the scily iles hospital. When i was 11 i fell of my bike and and the brake wire on the frame managed to remove a large piece of flesh. I was driven to the hospital in a taxi and imediatley seen to buy about 6 docters and nurses within 15 minutes i was sitting in a comfy room with a glorius sea view enjoying a plate of choccy bourns bons and a glass of squash.

The best bit of this story was that it was all free!

Hi Gordon,

I'm very sorry to here about your health problems, although France does have one of the best NHS in the world, possibly only second to Canada maybe.

I hope all goes well for your treatment and recovery, don't be tempted to lift anything, better off getting well and fighting fit first.

All the very best to you mate,

Lee.

Best of luck Gordon

Thanks to you all for your good wishes. If they can get me walking and have a weekend at home before the end of the month, I might just be able to enter a goblet for the challenge :| Something to aim for anyway.
