Had a good run at the lathe today and finished some bowls that were rough turned and also my fist ever pear. Finished my first ever Holly turning...a small dish. Lovely white wood, almost iridescent like mother of pearl. The pear was from some very old, very wormy apple and I finished the 9" spalted conker bowl also on the cole jaws and put a couple of decorative grooves in the base. I also squeezed in a Yew apple....blimey I love that wood. Really enjoyed myself today :)

Blimey Bob you don't half turn some rotten looking fruit

They do look good you seem to have got them down to a tee, I think you must be getting ready for the fruity turning competition later in the year

What did you do after lunch? :p some great shapes and finishing on that collection.

Thanks Dal. You should've seen the worm in that pear....riddled with dam things...lets see if they can eat their way out of a hole bunged up with ca glue and dust :)

The apple wood (for the pear) was fascinating...it had had a nail in it for goodness how many years (yes I did bandsaw right through it) and where it had stained the wood it was almost black, much like the ebonising effect on oak. But not uniform, it streaked about 6 inches in both directions from the nail...gave an amazing effect. That's the darker colouring on the pear (apple...that's confusing isn't it).

Thanks chaps. Er......took a long nap after lunch Chas :)

You must be kidding....I was at that lot from about 10 this morning til half an hour ago minus a walk in Virginia water with the kids and the Guv for a couple of hours before tea. OMG have any of you ever visited Virginia Water? Talk about riddled with fabulous trees. Many were down after those Feb winds. Beech, oak, chestnut and Larch with a trunk girth of at least 10 - 20 feet. Absolutely stunning. Crown Estate. Do you think they'd notice a bloke with a chainsaw???

Nice work Bob what a busy day. Being super critical the yew apple is maybe a little spherical? Love the holly bowl. Gave up on holly ages ago just couldn't seem to get it not to crack.

Fair comment Woody. I had actually totally cocked up that Yew apple and was ready to throw it. Let it stare at me for a few days then tried to rescue it today so I don't reckon it owes me anything :)

I'm the same with holly, cant get it stay decent to save my life. That piece I rough turned months ago not thinking for a second it would survive and sure enough......it cracked all over the place except in the base but left enough to salvage a shallow dish. Lets see if it moves further now. Hope not cos the walls are only 2mm thick.

You have certainly been busy, perversely I may well be turning an apple from pear wood :)

Had a chainsaw day myself, splitting some of last weeks acacia and some rather rotten walnut.

but I do like the holly dish... and the yew.. yesterday I managed two more pine apples...

good luck with your runner beans, I am scared to plant mine out as I seem to be overrun with both rabbit s and hares. the hares I like...

re the pear, what woodworm? this is woodworm.... :)
