If twenty members deposit £100 each with a tool club in mind, there would be a fund of £2000 to purchase so called specialist tools like panel cutting kits and other type kits.( which a member might only use once or twice). A token payment to, maintain the tool collection and a postage charge to forward a tool on to the next user might also be appropriate.

Any Interest.

Er, yes? To paraphrase Elizabeth Barrett Browning (and let's face it, we don't do that nearly enough round here); How do I see this ending in disaster? Let me count the ways... :(

Cheers, Alf
Killjoy or pragmatist - you decide

Nah, sorry, that would be a non-starter in my opinion. Better off saving for what you want then if you are not going to use it again sell it to recoup the cost.

Sending £100 to a stranger with the promise that I will be able to hire tool X for a further small fee in the future any time I like doesnt really float my boat.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, I am not trying to be, its just that I can forsee a large number of problems with this kind of idea :(

A faster way to cause a serious fracas among contributing members could not be invented!

MMMmmmm Sorry but I have to agree, I was once a member of a motorcycle club who had a simular arrangement but most of the expensive tools went missing, got broken and were not replaced by the offender. The tool club became very acrimonious with some members almost coming to blows. I would steer clear

Tell you what you all send me £100 i promise to spend it on tools  soz DW i know where your coming from it's a nice idea in an ideal world it's just some of the people outside devon are not that nice and some are robbing B@$%*^"! . Trouble with living in the most beautiful part of the country is you forget outside devon is a dog eat dog jungle except cornwall where dog is just part of a staple diet

lets see now take one dog some tatties sweds and carrots cover with a crust and you have a lot of them pasties :p

Yeah it would have been nice if it could work.
Think, £2000 would most probably buy 100 different router bits at £20 each
even more if trade price had been obtained. I can also see the problems others mentioned.
Perhaps I could join a group of Angels.

Don't make me come over there, AP...

Tsk, tsk. Terrible thing, envy :p

Cheers, Alf

P.S. Frank, carrots? For shame.

I was a member of a woodworkers' guild in the US which had a large and well equipped workshop. :D We were forever fixing tools that were found to have problems. :? Noone ever caused the problems, of course. I lost count of how many times planer knives were replaced and broken bandsaw blades were found in the bin. And that was among a bunch of people who KNEW each other and had to actually go to the workshop which was secured by a special comination lock known only to members and changed regularly, etc... Noone would dream of trusting their expensive wood to the blade that was in the table saw, or even think of using one of the rusty planes in the tool cupboard, and there weren't any screwdrivers left.. The workshop *space* was perfect, but the tools weren't to be trusted. I spent more time trueing up some tools than it was worth, for example, only to find the next time, probably a week or so later, they were all out of true again.

Nice idea in principle, hard to put into practice.

I know alf i do envy you for living in cornwall, if i lived there i too would get into using hand tools but i live in devon and we figured out years ago the devil does not make electricity and dont take people down the river to get dunked for using it

I have now invested my spare £100 ( with Axminster) plus another 50%and purchased a number of router bits. After reading all the scare stories above I am not letting them out of my sight

Ap do they still burn you as a heritic for driving a car, I just wondered as the road network seems to end just after Bideford

I dunno. How do I get into these Cornwall vs the Rest of The World XI competitions anyway? I mean

a) I'm not even Cornish
b) The RofTW hasn't a hope of winning...

Cheers, Alf
