At half term one of the grandchildren switched on there I pad or what ever it was and said "granddad your router is not protected with a password, I am using your internet connection, and so could other people be doing so as well"

I installed the router which I think was via Plug and Play. Should I uninstall and use the disk to install and do I then get the opportunity to select a password?

The model is a Sumvision. purchased earlier this year.

Hi,

You need to logon to your router via a cable connection and set a pasword, I use a line from a song so its easy to remember.
If you can't find the instructions google is your friend.

If you didn't get a printed manual with it then there is probably a pdf version on the CD, have a look. Usually you type an I.P. address into the address bar of a web browser (generally something like 192.168.1.1) to access the setup parameters of routers, and once in you'll be confronted with a login screen usually with a default login name and password such as "admin" or "user" - the manual should detail this and how to change it from the default. This is your first line of defense as it prevents others accessing your settings.
Once into the setup features it should be relatively simple to find your WiFi security settings and add a password, or change the encryption type to one with a "key" (a string of numbers/letters you will need to enter into other devices to grant wireless access - often printed on a label on the device itself).
Like I say, all this should be in the manual, but they vary wildly in quality of writing and clarity - as do the settings and features once you access them.
Sorry I can't be more specific DW, I'm no expert here and there does not seem to be a downloadable manual on their website.
Good luck.

Thanks for above info.

It will give me more problems I think because I have a Humax digital recorder connected to the TV and that uses the router to get me to UTube, facebook etc. etc. on the TV and I have enough aggro finding the router with that piece of equipment. At the moment it finds Sumvision.

Oh I wish I could go back to W98. :)

DW i have found the best way to deal with any issues to do with the internet/mobile phone etc is to let the kids sort it out for me :D

Once you have set a password on your router, next time your Humax tries to connect, I am sure it will pop up and object that it can't connect; you will then be able to type the password in, so the Humax will remember it for future use.

Hi, Devon

Any one could be using your connection to download disturbing, sensitive or illegal material which you could get into trouble for, so get it sorted.

Cannot find away to get to the router, looked in contral panel and nothing is mentioned about router, there is a modem quoted but nothing there me thinks.

Assuming the router is a separate box, there will be nothing in your 'main' PC control panel about it.
In all probability, you will need to point your browser on a wire connected PC, to the box, and adjust some settings using the pages that the box will project through your browser. When it gets to encryption options, do not choose WEP. WPA2 is far better (WEP can be broken in under a minute by someone parked outside your home, who will then have access to all the machines in your house, so any data on disc drives can be retrieved - its that vulnerable).
Download the manual from the net, and make a good strong cup of coffee, and find a 14-year old to help you.

It won't be in "Control Panel".
You will probably need to type "192.168.0.1" or something very similar into the address field of your browser(but to do this you may need a hard-wired connection[network cable] from your PC to the router).
That should bring up a page, in your browser, that allows you to examine and change various settings, including the WiFi password.
The only problem is, that getting access to the router in this way will probably involve using a completely separate password.
You really need to either:
a) Find the user's manual that came with the router.
or
b) Find out what the make and model is, and then try to download the user's manual.
c) As someone else said, get some kids to fix it.

Thanks again, off to the dentist in a few minutes and I know its going tobe a long long long visit.?

Could not see any mention of router at those pdfs by the way.
BTW the router is connected via a cable to my PC w7. but nothing in PC shows its.

Hi,

You should be able to access it theough a web page 192.168.0.1 put that in to you browser and see what comes up.
Do you have the manule or the CD that came with it?

Pete

OK guys I am back from the dentist and I can take any punches to the jaw at the present time.

found the manual and disk ( a piece of printed paper, which instructed me to enter http://192.168.1.1

User name was the default offered
password was the same as above

Typed them in and accepted.

I am confident that was there before but grandchild could use her ipod without any hindrance.

So do I use new username and pw and ignore the default, bearing in mind that is already logged as mentioned above.
I assume I am wanting to change security. that IP address above did not offer me the opportunity to create above.

Hi,

Thats just for loging on to your router, now you need to set a pasword for the wireless connection.
You need to go into the settings or your router and change it.

Pete

DW Thats just the router login.

There is a separate password for your wifi. Look around for options that mention setting wifi security.

If you get really stuck you should download:

http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx

Its free and then one of us nerds can just do it for you remotely.
