Going round the North East Open Studios a week or so back, encountered a really creative young(ish!) designer/maker, Richard Johnstone (http://rjfurniture.co.uk/) just across the howe from our house. He was sharing studio space with Rae Osborne, a local photographer who has done some super stuff around Scotland, mostly slightly quirky landscapes/buildings/artefacts, but in a style that I really like.
Richard was featured in one of the Monty Don "craft" programmes, which unfortunately I missed. His signature piece is his Angel chair, done for his undergraduate project. To my eye, it's one of the most interesting new takes on a chair, made out of a quarter sheet of ply, but repeatable in solid timber. He'd got several other pieces made using spare whiskey barrel staves (what else, in distillery country?) which also worked really well.
Well worth a look at his website, IMHO.
