Ideas for the seaside.

I'm currently at the beginning of working on an intarsia project called a day at the seaside.

I'm OK with the figures I need but am having difficulty in imagining what I can do with the sea and sand without it looking unnatural and lumpy, but at the same time don't want it to be a flat, coloured background.

Open to any ideas even if they depart from intarsia, including wood carving and the use of different material.

Thanks so much for that. I'd think I'd just got to that stage of not being able to see the beach for the sand. This has opened up many new ideas.
