My coronet Major lathe has a 6ft bed, yes correct a six foot bed the end bracket also has another 6" beyond the tailstock on tother side of the bracket. I do have a spare saddle that could be used there but why would I need to should I just move the bracket to the far end and have done with it what gain/loss apart from length might there be I also have another 2 ft that could be added at some time but would need another tailstock for that. Great for turning oars and paddles as well as the standard lamps it was first designed for. Anyone have a spare tailstock doing nowt?

If you don't mind paying top whack, Derek Pyatt seems to be the man who has cornered the market in old Coronet stuff. Not sure - is the bed on the Major larger diameter than on the Minor and its variants? If not, that might increase the supply of spare tailstocks.

My old Tyme Avon had a divided/two piece bed like you are proposing; it was pretty quick to remove/refit the tailstock, but it was only held by a plate underneath the bars. Much more of a hassle on the Coronet.

all arrived safe by the way dick, tailstock is a ring split on one side only. all fits on a 3" dia solid steel bar. I'll probably make one in the end when I find a use for it. cast ali should do it.
