A very unusual thing happened to me a few weeks ago, swagman posted pictures of wooden toothing plane he had made

coffin-toother-t82169.html

and I actually thought to myself I want one (unusual because wooden planes aren't my thing), so I've taken the plunge.

Ladies and gentleman my first expensive wooden plane, a local plane for local people.

Always thought Gleave was just a dealer but visiting the current website they have a flyer stating "Plane Makers & Cutlers"

Yeah, be careful Mr P. One of my first woodie restoration jobs was on a tired old plane from a junk stall at a camp site near Snowdon. I was so pleased when I cleaned it up - as encouraged by people on here - and was able to read the "Gleave" mark.

But they were at Oldham Street, Manchester - is that local enough?

Think that's the nearest I'm going to get, we don't all live in Bristol with a whopping 15 makers according to PlumberPete.

I might be a lot nearer Sheffield but don't know of any Oldham makers and ebay only has half a dozen Manchester makers/dealers.

Athrington, Coates, Edwards, Gleave, Hathersich, Wilson but that's only a three month sample so bound to be a few more rarer examples.

The joys of living in poor mill town, then again thinking about all the thousands of Victorian terraces in the town there must have been plenty of tool traders supplying the building trade so maybe I will find a genuine Oldham plane one day.

Stewie & Jimi,

Thanks chaps, if you say it's gorgeous and a bargain I certainly won't argue with two of the most talented tool makers on here.

Nice one P, love the makers mark have a few planes by him :)
This thread makes me want to buy more so I have to depart before I..... Weeeeeee

I have a toothing plane with a Kuntz iron, works nice.
