He certainly deserves recognition as a poet, and has had plenty of it from literary academics over the last twenty years or so. The thing that is different about this award is that the Nobel committee have picked someone that pretty much everybody has heard of, so mainstream media will make more of it.
Anyone else still not got around to reading JMG le Clezio? (Last year's winner, IIRC.)
