Hi everybody,
We have this back gate at my grandparents house that's in pretty bad shape.
Some of the wood has gone rotten, and it's started to sag somewhat.
It's needed doing for a while, and I've offered to help them rebuild it.
I've been procrastinating over it for a bit, and have been somewhat afraid to properly look into it for fear I'd start it and then something would go wrong and they wouldn't have a gate at all.
It's got to the point now where the wood has started going rotten, so it really needs to be dealt with before it ends up no longer serving its purpose.
The overall design of the gate, if I were to build it to the same spec is pretty simple, as you can see.
The bit I'm unsure of, though, are the rivets and bolts.
I'd be fine with building the thing, but to actually hang it I don't really have any experience with.
As you can see, the gate is attached via three steel poles; two either side and one in the middle where the side door is.
You can't quite see the far right in the pictures, but that part basically mirrors the left hand side.
I'm not sure if I were to rebuild it, how I'd attach the new gate to the existing steel poles.
I'm not sure weather I can reuse the bolts, and to get new ones that fit might prove challenging.
Maybe they'll be stuck in here and won't come out at all.
I was wondering what you thought of the project and what I should do?
As I say, to essentially make the same gate as is on there and hang it the same way with those three poles would seem the option I want to go with, I'm just not sure whether I'll be able to use those existing poles if I can't find new bolts that fit, the old ones are stuck riveted in there etc
Just a little nervous as to not start it and then realise half way through that the existing poles can't be used, and they'll basically be needing a whole new design.
It's about five meters wide, and 5ft 11 inches tall.
What you have is four parts:
The main part opens with a latch in the middle and then two bolts at the floor to allow the car into the garage.
Then to the right, you have a side door for people to walk through without having to pull open the double doors for the car.
Next to that side door you have a gate that mirrors the one at the far left but obviously doesn't open.
Thoughts?
Thanks a lot!
