How to remove chrome?

I've just sold a stanley compass plane on evil bay. It was tatty but well worth cleaning up, and as I packed it for posting I started to wonder: is there a way of removing chrome plating other than a purely mechanical one?

Hmm... I don't fancy having to get rid of a bucket full of hexavalent chromium...

I thought Stanley mostly used nickel plating on their tools - but presumably the chemical answer to removing nickel is similarly toxic.
