Hi
I am brand new to wood turning.
I bought a jet 1440 on eBay some time ago - but health issues meant that I could not start setting it up until now.
It’s all assembled but the spindles are not in line . There appears to be some play in the heavy end - see enclosed photos.
Any advice would be most appreciated.

You may want check the bottom of the head stock for damage, like dents or small deformation that could happen if the parts get banged together when being transported. It doesn't take much to cause the misalignment shown in your picture. No amount of tightening will correct that if it's dented. Check, with a file to flatten the mating surface, the head stock should lay flat by itself on the ways. Also check the same surfaces on the tail stock as that area can suffer the same damage if mishandled in transit. Good luck, and have fun when you get it sorted.

Thanks Bert - will have a look at it tomorrow.
I have moved the head stock so often today that I am worn out!
It's a big lump of metal.

Sorted!- but not sure why!
I took the headstock off and gave it a clean - refitted it and indexes through 90 degrees - there was a soft ‘clunk ‘ and it’s all lined up - see photo.
Thanks for the advice.

On the subject, does anyone have a JEt1642. I have just got one and the tail stock has an incredible amount of play. I'll try get a picture later, but at the minute, before you apply the lock bar to it, you can rotate/slide the front end of it perpendicular to the ways by about 15mm.
So as your sliding the tailstock up towards the headstock, you can be pushing and pulling the 'centre' over and back a half an inch. I presume something must be wrong as I have never had this before with any other lathes.
