How do you use a drill press/pillar drill?

Most people ( from what I can gather on here ) make a table to sit on top of the movable drill table with a fence and T track to hold things in place. You will need to make allowances for its thickness when working out what size bench frill you want as it will obviously reduce the quill to table depth.

I'm thinking of ordering this today, because I figure it would be much easier and quicker than using a hand drill?
And safer...
My main question is, how is the piece you're drilling held down? I'll be drilling small things like small wooden blocks for kids.
I'd be getting this one: http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-ax ... rod719937/
Clamps like this, perhaps http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-axminster-drill-clamps-prod23568/ (might be too big though), or a vice like this one http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-axminster-craft-drill-vices-prod376885//

I have made a table. I use a machine vice, clamps. It is not just a drill, but can be a repeatable jig, a drum sanding setup, etc.

Just to second the comment about safety. One of the most common causes of workshop accidents is just holding pieces of thin metal in the hand when drilling. The drill grabs as it breaks through the lower surface and turns the workpiece into an unguarded circular saw :( . Not SO dangerous with wood, but still not very accurate.

that's very nice mate is there any chance you could supply a drawing or dimensions as this would be very help full to me thanks in advance Ash

Bananas.
Thats what I use, bananas. I don't have a pic, unfortunately. but I'm sure there must be some footage of me using them, online.
Mike's looks like a very useable setup, to me. =D> =D>
I think I'd keep that back fence lower. It will get in the way of the chuck when using very small drills. Mine separates, so it's not so much of a problem. But that looks good to me.

It might help, with small blocks, if you can drill before final sizing. Leave lots of blocks attached to each other, drill them, then separate them.
