how do i treat a tree root

i have two large tree roots about 3 foot in diameter and 4-5 foot tall. iv been asked to make some outdoor furniture with them, iv been told they've been out of the ground for roughly 20 years.

my problem is i dont have a clue how to treat them.

any help would be much appreciated. cheers
