Hi, I am in the process of making some turning tools similar to the Easywood product.
Is there any ratio between the length of the tool bar and the length of the tang.

Regards

Vic

To be honest that doesn't sound enough, for my peace of mind in any event. A half inch diameter shaft on that basis would need only a tang length of two and a half inches ?

Having said that, I would have thought that it was also relevant to consider the length of the tool protruding from the handle, as Vic suspected, as it seems logical that the leverage on the handle is also as important ?

I don't have a rule of thumb particularly, tending to do what looks right and sensible instinctively, which may not help much ! :)

Cheers, Paul

Must admit I tend to allow a bit more engagement than the 5X if I have the steel length available, one factor being that it provides a bit better balance, or should I say a balance I prefer, if I have the additional weight in the handle.

One thing to consider if you are handling round stock is the cross section of the handle at the bottom of the bored hole, ideally you don't want the hole to terminate right at the thinest point of a waisted handle.

The 5x is what I was told by one of the turning tool manufacturers. As with any rule of thumb, it depends how many thumbs you have!

 true enough Paul gives a starting indication at least, and then perhaps add extra depending on length.

Cheers, Paul

Some days I think I have Ten.

And thanks to this thread I've admitted to myself I have two home made tools in use that do really need proper handles made for them, now where's those Ash blanks that were put away for such an occasion?
