Looking at hollowing tools, this is not asking for recommendation as I have read many other posts on the subject.

Anyway this is a question to those that own them

First one is the Crown Revolution with the 1/2" shaft and 5/8" shaft what I would like is the maximum diameter of the head on these two.

The next is the Ultima system by Robert sorby again the diameter of the head

and finally the Roly monro same question

These are the three I have narrowed it down too

I know what the recommended depth of hollowing for them

I would suggest you also ask what the degree of articulation is. It is good to know how small a hole you can enter with the tool head but if it then won't go round the corner you have a problem :)

That is true Mark and thank you for pointing it out but at least it will give me an idea roughly. It also depend on what you fit on the end as well, but I am talking of the standard head that comes with the tools.

This is directly from the website of 'The Toolpost' which I think is the only supplier of the Munro system.
I have several deep hollowers but since I acquired the mega 2 ( with the 5/8 shaft) I use it a lot more than any of the others.
Having said that, of course the others have their uses where the Rolly may be too big or I need a small shaped carbide scraper,
and, like all deep hollowing tools which use the shielded ring principle, regardless of source, it is really designed for use in wet end-grain. Whilst it will perform very adequately in dry timber too, it is at its least effective when used on side grain - where the grain runs across the lathe bed, as in bowl turning. It will still cope with this abuse T

The Munro system has been extended and enhanced over the years so that it now comprises both the original (though modified) large system with its 12 mm cutter as well as the smaller 'Mini' system with the 8 mm cutter, to which have now been added shear scraper heads for the ultimate in hollowing versatility. The picture for complete tools is completed by the unhandled variants of the standard tools. Along with those go the various spare cutters and blades, the sharpening jig and various spare and extension components. We have tried to append descriptions that enable you to identify the parts you might need if you already own a Rolly tools and are looking for spares.

1) The Mini Hollower uses an 8mm diameter cutter and is supplied, as standard with a 1/2" shaft (though options are available).
2) The Mega Hollower (the original Rolly tool), like the Mega 2 uses a 12mm diameter cutter and is supplied, as standard with a 5/8" shaft.
3) The cutter for the earlier Mega tools has a tapped hole in it for the securing screw, which passes through a plain drilled hole in the cutter platform.
4) Conversely, the cutter for the later (Mega2) versions has a plain hole and the securing screw is screwed into a threaded hole in the cutter platform.

Thank you John. B.

I think what I should have said is what in the minimum size hole for the various hollows that I listed.
I have found out that the crown head for both size shafts will pass through a 20mm hole not allowing for any undercutting.
Also for the Robert Sorby Ultima with the 5/8" shaft the head requires a 3/4" hole

Sorry for mixed measurements but that is how I was given them

I would question the size of 3/4" for the Sorby Ulitma. Just look at the picture in the link below. If the shaft is 5/8" the head construction would appear to be more than 1/8" greater :?:

With all the tools you list you'll also need to consider where does the tool cut i.e. to the front, side or is it adjustable?
