Hollowing out a log ?

I'm stuck on this probably very simple question. I want to hollow out a log to make a 'natural' bird box but I'm not sure what I need to achieve this end. The log is from a larch and is about 6" wide and 9" deep, age since cutting is about a year and it's been in my workshop since then. What is the best way, and safest way to go about doing this ?

If the word wrap is a problem go to rec.woodworking and do a search on
"bird log"
