I know that traditionally the side with most knuckles is attached to the frame, and the other to the door, but does it make any difference?
The weight of the door bears on the same number of knuckles whichever. I've heard all manner of suggestions over the years, but not one that makes sense.

According to my college tutor... no it doesn't make a difference.... but do them all the same way on a door

I spoke to my brother in law, who was a dockyard joiner, and he thinks it is for no other reason than conformity - it's unimportant in itself, but where large numbers of people are doing the same job, it makes sense to have everything done exactly the way.
This seems to me as likely as any other explanation.

Actually it does make a difference

the most knucles need to be a the frame side, as the weight of the door will rest on two parts, and is then also steadied at the top and the bottom, so all forces are then relaid into the door frame, rather then the door

so yes it does make a difference
