I was looking at a dungeon door in stockport today thinking about how easy it would be to unscrew it and get in.

Could that be why more hinges were on the inside than outside in the past? it seems to be more for convenience to put them on the outside, no? so that the door is easier to hang without errors? can anyone give me historic information on why we use hinges on the outside or inside? and where it comes from? I've noticed it varies a lot

Depends which way the door opens on old hinges.

Dungeon doors were made to keep people in, not to keep people out.
