Hinge ?

Hello everyone

I am making a small project, a box. I am using thinner material than I have used before for boxes. It is 3/8" thick.

My question is: how to attach the lid. All the hinges I have used before requires 1/2" stock. I mortice the top edge of box and under the bottom of the lid leaving only the barrel of hinge exposed.

How does everyone handle this situation?
As a last resort, I could leave hinges off and make a floating top.

I appreciate any suggestions.

If you shop around you will find hinges that are narrow enough for your needs, as you are in America you could try http://www.brusso.com/

This box has 3/8" hinges from my local hardware store.

Or make your own form of pivot, this one has small brass rods as pivots

Thanks for the reply. First things first. Those are beautiful box. I really like the offset opener and the splines look great. ( if this box gets finished, I will not post pics after seeing yours)

We may have some smallish hinges on this side of the pond, have not noticed. I live near a small town that doesn't stock a lot of stuff. 100 miles to Oklahoma City and 100 miles to Dallas. :x
I have bought a little off the internet because I may be out of the mood by the time required stuff arrives.

Thanks for all the comments, yes the boxes are mine, made from spalted beech from a wind blown tree from my fathers golf course - had to find a use for the short lengths as the green keepers got there first with their chainsaws :evil: As you can see from these I rather like spalted timbers

The Pivot box was loosely based on a design in Peter Lloyds book and made just after seeing his exhibition.

Travis, a common source in the US for small quantities as might be needed for your project is Rockler. Here's a link to some mini piano hinges at their website,

Also look for Woodworker's Supply of New Mexico as they carry useful stuff. The only problem I've always had with both these companies, and also Woodcraft is that they tend to be rather expensive, but if it's just one or two items I've been looking for they are often convenient. Slainte.

Jason, nice boxes. How are the brass rod pivots fixed? Do the pass right though the sides of the box & into the lid? How are they held in place?
