a thing that I always think when doing a whole house of doors is that the skill of the previous joiner impacts directly on the job. so if he(or she) did a good job 20 or 100 years ago then my job is much easier. if the frames been put by a " builder" then watch out your in for a long day!
 
also the trend jig gives 2 pennies gap(at least at the hinge side)

On the Trend jig I have the hinge gap is dictated by the depth setting of the router, for most hinges you just set the depth stop on the router to the thickness of the hinge leaf and it gives you a suitable gap?
 
I've never used one only seen doors fitted by them(always with door stops btw) I'm guessing with some hinges setting them the depth of the leaf leaves a large gap(I'm thinking ball bearing hinges) which was on the doors I saw
