Hi I am Jimmy or Cubby if you like I am obviously new I have started a college course 6 months ago in Bespoke Hand made furniture making :)

I thought I would join this forum so I could discover more about wood working pick up hints and tips and just talk wood work and timber knowledge
I recently completed my first piece of furniture, A wall cabinet in Red Alder

Welcome to the forum Jimmy. Hope you have fun and learn a lot from the members on here.

Try to put photographs of your work on here as well as we love to see just what is being done. Good luck on the course.,

Alex

Welcome Cubby. You will find this forum a mine of information using the search facility and a friendly place to chat about woodworking and related topics. Don't be shy and join in the topics. Once you've got a few posts on you'll be able to post pictures and show us your wall cabinet.

If you have a sharpening related question, you can use the search box to see if it's been covered or...............................ask the question, open the popcorn and watch the TCT sparks fly.

Oh wow yes sharpening is something I struggle with a bit I am learning to do it free hand I am planning to start my own business using traditional methods and using no machines as much as possible I am even planning to builda pole lathe.

I have been shown many different ways of sharpening by different people on the course which has left me kind of confused about which is the best way and so I find I end up combining all the different ways using honing guides , free hand, forward and backward, just forward, just backward XD and all that kind of thing

welcome to the forum Jimmy and best of luck with the learning. You will find this forum an invaluable resource for knowledge, skill and idea bouncing generally but never forget one universal truism:

If we don't see photo's....it didn't happen :)

Red Alder......course you did.....sure.....we believe you....hint...phones have cameras these days!

Welcome jimmy what phil means is this is a controversial subject and we argue endlessly about it
Truth be told there is no right or wrong way you just need to decide which system suits you.

My choice of system.
