Doing a pair of hexagonal columns as part of my mantelpiece.

Last time they were round, and it was easier to turn the central section, then turn two discs to cap it off top and bottom.
As this time its hexagonal, would I be better sticking to round, or should I make these 'caps' also hex ?. Central; sections are about 100mm dia' and i think the caps should be wider by about 10 or 15mm overhang.
If i do hex, I'll probably machine a staff bead or such into it all the way around to make it look less plain.
