Hi! I've recently inherited a grafton 60 drill press. The plan is to restore it. The only problem I have with it that it didn't come with a chuck. I cannot find any information at all on the internet about the drill so I don't know what size chuck will fit. Can anyone help? Thank you :).

I have a grafton pillar drill, but a 'sensitive' not a 60. Although from photos they look the same. It has a jt33 chuck.

I replaced mine as it was in poor condition, picked one up on eBay for about £10

i was thinking a jt33 chuck. I cant seem to find one anywhere though unless I by from the us and they are quite expensive. the measurement of the spindle or arbour doesn't quite match a j33 chuck though. it seams at some point some has grinded it down a bit unless its down to wear and tear over the years

brilliant. thanks for your help. how old are these machines? there doesn't seem to be any information on the internet about grafton. I was hoping to source a couple of other spare parts for it but it looks like I've got no chance! im missing the quill return spring cover plate and the spring pin stopper thing (haven't a clue what its called). looks like I will have to knock something up.

I have just picked one up with a Jacobs 6A US chuck. A K3 key doesn't work properly. I saw one post elsewhere about cutting back the gear and the pivot stem. Does anyone have experience. Glad of the post, as it confirms mine is in the original colour.

I couldn't find much either when I bought mine a few years back. All I could really work out is that it is probably a uk clone of the US Atlas drill press. If you do an image search of atlas drill presses the front pulley cover is identical. Most seem to be from around 1950ish. Will pop to the shed now and look about the spring.

Photos will follow but info I have.
- found original chuck Jacobs 6A-33, made in USA Hartford Conn
- coil spring measures 50mm across and 13mm deep, so 2" x 1/2"
- plate covering coil spring day Pat 555186, any way to look that up?
- supplier seems to be Buck and Hickman, 23 albermarle road, beckenham, Kent

thanks for the info.

chuck is on order.

I did email buck and hickman as a long shot but had no reply.

I think with the cover plate I'm going to have make one out of stainless steel or some thing. could you take a picture of how the spring sits and of the cover plate also please.

thanks

Dave

Dave,

Some photos, remember tho this is not a 60, and it looks fractionally different.

thank, the pictures are a great help. it looks like the spring set up is exactly the same as mine.

stellamaster... where did you find the patent? could you send me the link?

thanks

Dave

Sorry, but I haven't the IT skills. Go into the UK Government "Search for a patent" page. Scroll down to the Espacenet link. Just enter the 6 digit 555186 in the publication field and the Grafton patent comes up at number 5 as I didn't enter any country reference.
