Help identifying this wood, please

The parent in laws were going to take this piece of wood to the local tip. So I kindly said I would take it off their hands to save them moving it

So the question is, anyone got a clue what it might be? Would it be classed as spalted?

I suppose the next question is what to do with it once I know what it is.

My first thought is Ash. It looks like there is definite spalting between that beautiful burr. I'll come back here to see what others think. What to do with it? Can't think of any ideas outside of giving it to me.

Great save, thrown away would have been a travesty! The pale wood looks very ashy, but the contrasting dark burr wood is throwing me.

What to do with it is a great question. Is burr wood stable enough for structural elements? Seen it used with great success for door panels, or perhaps some amazing boxes?

Look alot like a piece of walnut I have, would make several beautiful bowls

An interesting mix of spalting and burr. Doubtless you'd have to pay a pretty penny for that in a specialist timber merchant. A good find.
