Anant is garbage. Consider yourself enlightened on that point.

ive seen review that say they are a mid range plane that if tuned well can equal stanley and LN, lol. i though it was a load of crap after all you pay for what you get and for $30 new.. u know any thing a bout boston planes??????

FWIW I bought a faithfull No4 smoother and I initially dismissed it as rubbish. However on further investigation it's not as bad as perhaps you would expect. Hardwood handles, it feels heavier than my Record and to be fair to it it seems to cut just as well. Although it does need the sole flattened to get very fine shavings, all for less than £30.00 though. I would happily take a punt on an ANANT and simply send it back if you find a problem with it. Nothing against the premium planes, I will no doubt end up buying an example at some stage, but they are eye wateringly expensive (of course for a reason)

It all depends on what you want it for, a cheapo will do very good site work and if you damage it, you wont start crying over its cost. For bench work I'd say Anant are at the bottom of the pile. I have had a couple and unless they have upped their game over the years they take a lot of fettling to make them worthwhile. As to Faithful they are another thing. I have a no10 made by Faithful and its very good. Not quite as well made as a Stanley Premium or LV et al, and MUCH better than the new hobby Records and Stanley's, a bloody good plane for the price.

After a bit of fettling

There are worse than Anant. I had an SV (also known as Esvee). It was really bad. Not so bad that it couldn't be made to work reasonably well (non of them are). In fact the blade itself was quite good.

Actually that's not a bad idea. I'm rather bored of hearing about 'the best Plane in the world'. I think we should actually find and discuss the worst metal bodied commercial production Plane ever made. I'm even willing to spend 2 or 3 quid to buy it just so that I can have the gratification of throwing it from a great height. Hope it breaks otherwise folk might begin to think it's a Clifton. In fact I might use their bridge.

Somewhere I have one of these pressed sheetmetal blockplanes with a safety razor blade. You could even use it as a rabetplane or a chiselplane. However nothing ever really worked for me when I gave it a try. I also have a Stanley Handyman from the 1990's. Never could that thing in reasonable working order either.

ill pros get the anant plane then, i can get one for £3, yes three pounds. might aswel, but no1 has said a thing about that boston block planes? anyone? thanks

Glad I'm not the only one. I'm tuning up some old records planes at the moment but there is a little bit of me that is wondering why I'm bothering when I could of bought brand new faithful brand planes for the same money needing less work to tune up. It might of made me look a monster but if they work well what's the problem? I try to avoid being a badge snob/inverted snob (this works both ways, I'm not dismissing premium brands, they are wonderful if you have the cash)
