It came with a load of yew. I know what it is but have never seen this timber before although the trees are quite common.

Neither answer is correct so far :)

My Gran had a tree in her garden when I was little. there are quite a lot of them about especially associated with older houses.

Tomorrow to make it easier I will show pictures of the leaves, although that is a big clue already.
 
Laurel would have been my second after apple. If it is Laurel, prepare to be assailed by the smell of human wee if you turn it.....its disgusting. It also splits like how's yer father
 
Well done. Vic and woodmonkey. It is bay tree. locally known as laurier.
I have never seen wood from one before so picked up that piece (not sure why) just to try turning it to see what it is like. Will have to spindle turn the two rounds, not so sure yet what to try with the fork.

Perhaps I would have done better to have brought back a few bits of boxwood?

Yesterday I sorted the yew and some leftovers into the big barn, some cut into blanks for bowls, some left as trunks but all pva'd.
