Hi fellow makers,
After some rearrangement of my bedroom I made some space to make 2 bedside cabinets. I decided to take an adventure into hardwood's and see which one i like to use for making the doors and draw panels. The carcass of the cabinets will be made of plywood so it leaves me to wonder which wood is ideal for the top, door and draw panel. My preference was Meranti but my uncle said its got no grain style to it and rather dull wood to use. my reasons for choosing it was, relatively cheap compared to other hardwood, durable, light and personally i thought it looked nice, with the colour and grain. I have visited the Sykes timber yard in atherstone and local Jewson (which is not a timber yard but better than Selco). jewson were charging me £12.49 per metre for 9" wide by 20mm thick and Sykes only gave price based quantity ordered. i will visit another timber yard in oldbury, and yet to visit Vincent timber
The design i wanted to do was to 4" by 1" lengths to make a outside frame using bridle joints. the inside will have rebates before the bridle joints are done and the inside of the frame will have a plywood panel held in by beading. the draw panel will be one plain piece. they will be finished with chrome handles. i wanted to resist staining but since i'm using plywood i will have to and give it a rubbing of hard wax oil.
Does anyone recommend Meranti for this taking into consideration the joints i will make and if not which other hardwood would be ideal? I don't want to splash out a lot of money on the hardwood, as my budget is only £100 top. are there any other yards you can recommend?
