I've just bought a Hemlock mopstick to replace our old handrail but I'm not sure about which finish would be best. I'll probably apply a light stain first to tone it down a bit but what to do next. Sanding Sealer might be nice but is it durable enough? Don't really like varnish but if it's likely to be the best choice which one? What do the experts reckon!
 
Tradiional shellac, eg button polish or one of the lighter ones. Former will be too dark red for you.
 
Shellac is OK, but not very durable in this sort of situation. I did mine with poluurethane many, many years ago and it still looks good.
