Given the super cold days, I was looking for something to take the edge off in my garage. I don't really want a floor standing heater as I already have very light space. As the lighting in my garage is also very poor, I was wondering if I could kill two birds with one stone and pick up some Halogen bulbs?

I'm going to assume that these aren't going to make a bit of difference as they're only rated at 77W?

What about a work light? This comes in a 120w and 400w version.

Has anyone experimented with such lights? or am I wasting my time and should just pick up a some halogen heater?

I've used one very much like that second link on site before. There is actually a surprising amount of heat out of them, especially if you remove the glass which also seems to increase the lifetime of the bulb. Should "take the edge off" as you say, but obviously not as good as a heater.

Do you know what the wattage was?

I would find the light from one of those unpleasant after a short while and the heat output if quite small.

The quartz type heaters csn be quite cheap?

I got one of these yesterday. Brilliant. I've had it on one bar all afternoon, and it made the difference whether I could work in my garage or not. I've more than enough small LED spots for lighting.
I suspect you'd do better to have a heater for heat, and lighting for lights rather than a compromise which does neither well.

That looks interesting and quite cheap! It says it's designed for "an area of approximately 6.25m² (67.3ft²)", which is quite a small space. How large is your workshop? and would you say it takes the edge off the whole area? or just the area around the heater as per the (67.3ft²)?

It's a single garage, and it's not really cold atm. Having said that I only left it on one bar. it is noticeable when going from the kitchen to the garage that there is heat there, though. I only wanted to take the chill off and have a means of warming my hands (if I go in to warm them, it's an hour before I'm out again) - I'm diabetic so my hands get cold very quickly, although I don't feel the cold badly. I've my bench and lathe on opposite sides of the garage with the heater over the bench, and so far I'm well pleased. I've a bit of insulation to sort and a draught proof strip and then with the three bars I'd think it perfectly adequate (Cornwall, mind - rarely goes much below 0c). I've no gas so have Economy 7 - so I'll put it on a timer on full for a couple of hours if I know I'm going to be there in the morning. P&P is the same for two - you could always get two.

ps. it was ordered late 24/12 and delivered 29/12 - I don't think that's bad - all credit to them!
