Groundbolts

I've had to do a couple of running repairs on fencing recently by adding some bracing struts, to anchor the struts I've used groundbolts (I first encountered them in Germany where they're Erdankers). For very quick secure fixing I can't recommend them highly enough, a few good belts with a lump hammer and a coach screw into the timber strut - job done. They're not inexpensive (~£6 ea. for the size I bought), but in the context of regular fence post fixings this isn't exorbitant, and the speed of fixing, versatility and re-usability makes them well worth the money for me. I used the 30x440mm which has a ~8mm hole in the top for fixing, they also supply a range of bracketry etc. for various applications.

They're a strip of steel twisted into a spiral. They hammer (or screw) in and can be screwed out if required. They hold an enormous lateral load, but shouldn't be loaded in the vertical axis because they'll simply screw out.

I think there are slightly different doggy ones, put in by twisting, not hammering.

I've got a couple of dozen of these from when we were camping/caravaning and they are fantistic. Just screw them in with a cordless drill. I have the previous generation mentioned, including some bigger ally ones and a bleedin great thing to hold a big sun brolly.
