Afternoon all,

I want to buy a pair of new wheels for my 6" grinder. Up until now I've been using the standard cheapo wheels that came with it. I was going to buy some white aluminium oxide wheels as they seem to be the popular choice for general plane and chisel grinding. I also have to grind the odd bit of HSS for my engineer's lathe.

Where is the best place to get some new wheels? Should I go with Norton or are the Axminster wheels ok? Any other options?

Thanks

Well it seems I may have done a wrong'un.....

My grinder is a Silverline model, and for the price it has served me well. Unfortunately it takes a 150mm x 16mm wheel, which appears to be a non-standard size. The data plate on the grinder actually says it will take a 3/4" wheel (contrary to the manual) but I've tried and it will not fit inside the guard. Plus it doesn't leave much of the mandrel exposed for the nut.

The only non-cheapo 16mm wheel (or 5/8") I can find is a 5" diameter. I'm not really willing to go to a wheel that small. So unless anyone has clever suggestions, it looks like I could be in the market for another grinder....

There is an axminster one at around £50 with a wide white wheel on it. I bought the previous incarnation a few years back ...... It was in a sale and cost less than £30
Has served me well

By the way
The big mistake most grinder users make is they do not dress the wheel any where often enough

I must admit I am guilty of that. I haven't bothered since the diamond bit of my dresser made a bid for independence. I was going to try one of those tee-shaped dressers next.
