Hi there i want some advise about grinders for sharpening wood lathe chisels and im not sure what to get in the price range of about £100 new or used, ive seen many different types and im not sure to get a jig or one with ajustable tool rests.
any help would be greatly appreciated,
Reuben.

I prefere to grind mine on a waterstone grinder. I usually use cutting and not scraping methods when I turn and therefore I need to produce a slightly concave continous bevel on my turning tools. Doing that on a high speed bench grinder without overheating the carbon steel would be way too difficult for me who only turn occasionally. I grind freehand. It is easiest that way.

One of my grinders is a 1960-ies Alimak fitted with a Gotland sandstone wheel. The other one is home made from an industrial washing machine and is also fitted with a Gotland sandstone wheel.
In my oppinion Gotland sandstone is superrior to all those modern facy wheels but I don't know if it is quarried anymore.
Maybe you can find some locally quarried sandstone wheel somewhere? England is full of sandstone. Then you need a motor and a shaft and that's it.

You would probably get more relevant answers if you asked in the woodturning section. :)
Most woodturning tools can be sharpened by using a flat platform.
The hard ones are the gouges, exept for the spindle roughing gouge or a gouge with a straight across grind, as they have to be rolled & swung sideways at the same time. Once you have ground the tool to the required shape then you are looking for repeatability so as not to waste metal. That's where a jig comes in.
Most find a 6" grinder with white wheels adequate. More upmarket are 8" grinders with white, pink, blue or CBN wheels. Others swear by the Sorby Pro-edge, a belt sander/linisher & others by Tormek or similar wet wheel systems.
