Bought this today:

2017-04-29 16.44.38 (Small).jpg

6" by 2" by 1", density 1.87 g/cc, absorbs water very quickly.

Seems to be molded, all faces are smooth except the end faces which appear to have saw marks.

Unmarked except for the 320 and the N on the top face. Presumeably a 320 grit.

Appears to be unused.

Colour is much like the pic, when clean it's a sage green.

Any ideas what it could be? Is it a run of the mill 99p stone or perhaps something better?

I don't recognise it; try sharpening (well, rubbing!) a normal carbon steel
blade (e.g. 1" chisel) on it, using water as lubricant, and see how it goes.

(water won't harm an oil stone, but oil will harm a water stone,
so use water for first trial)

Thanks Bug.

Yes, I'll give it a try in the morning.

I bought a few rough old chisels today so I've got plenty of raw material to play with.

I guess it's just a cheap old stone but I was hoping that someone would tell me that it was something special.

Living and learning!
